Today we rode the route we will be riding out of town tomorrow. We weren`t sure about it, so we decided to try it with our bikes unloaded. Once we get across the river, we get on a trail that we can ride until we are out of Portland. It`s a great little trail and much less stressful than negotiating all the traffic. Our plan is to only ride about 35 miles tomorrow to a state park where we will camp.
Today we rode in quite a bit of rain--cold rain. We happened upon a carnival where many middle-schoolers were enjoying their next-to-last day of school. We got out of the rain for a bit and had some hot chocolate which fortified us until we stopped for lunch. It made Caroline so nostalgic for her middle-school students that she might go back to teaching next year--NOT!
On our way back to Portland we missed our turn and rode about 5 extra miles which was not a problem as the sun was shining brightly by then. As we made our way back into Portland we joined the dozens and dozens of cyclists presumably commuting from work. It was a sight to see. Of course by then it had started to rain again, but not nearly so hard. We stopped off at a brew pub for dinner and are now just about ready to call it a day.
It`s been lovely to be in Portland for a few days to get ready for the tour. I`m glad we have a few more days here at the end of our tour.
